whatchamacallit

whatchamacallit is een op de 19e-eeuwse freakshows geïnspireerde performance-expositie van mensen. Geen freaks als sensatie, vertier of reclamebord, geen kunstjes of trucjes, maar vijf spelers die hun lichaam inzetten als kunstobject, kijkobject, machtsobject en lustobject. In een tijd van constante digitale zelfprofilering vragen we ons af: hoe gebruiken we en zetten we ons lichaam in om geliefd te zijn of om te slagen? Hoe gaan we om met de objectificatie van ons lichaam en wat voor invloed heeft dat op ons als mens?

Het theater wordt omgetoverd tot een museale setting: een landschap van verschillende installaties van lichamen, soundboxen en schermen. Geen klassieke tribune. Je kiest zelf wie jouw blik naar zich toetrekt, als een soort live Instagram.

De spelers, vier professionele dansers, poseren hun uiteenlopende lijven. Elk 'perfecte' hoekje van hun lichaam wordt getoond. Elke centimeter huid wordt uitgerekt, gepord en door elkaar geschud ook het overtollig vel, de vetrollen en kraaienpoten.

Het lichaam is de essentie, techniek is de extensie. Via tv-schermen en soundboxen verbonden aan de performers ontdek je de figuurlijke binnenkant van hun dagelijkse leven en lijven. Wij horen hun afknappers, guilty pleasures, verlangens en confrontaties.

In whatchamacallit ervaren we de sterke drang om fragiliteit en wat we normaal willen verstoppen, bloot te geven. Met humor en rauwheid gaat deze voorstelling op zoek naar de ultieme intimiteit en menselijkheid tussen spelers en publiek. De voorstelling speelt op spannende balans van op je gemak zijn en de vraag ‘mag ik mijn ogen over jouw lichaam laten rollen?’

whatchamacallit is a performance exhibition of people inspired by 19th century freak shows. No freaks as sensation or billboard, no entertainment or tricks, but five performers who use their bodies as art objects, viewing objects, objects of power and of desire. In a time of constant digital self-profiling, we ask ourselves: how do we use and deploy our bodies to be loved or to succeed? How do we deal with the objectification of our bodies and how does it affect us as human beings?

The theatre is transformed into a museum setting: a landscape of different installations of bodies, sound boxes and screens. No classical theatre-setting. You choose who you want to watch, like a kind of live Instagram.

The four performers pose their divergent bodies. Every 'perfect' corner of their bodies is shown. Every inch of skin is being stretched, poked and shaken, including their excess skin, rolls of fat and crow's feet.

The body is the essence, technique is the extension. Through TV screens and sound boxes connected to the performers, you discover the figurative insides of their daily lives and bodies. We hear their guilty pleasures, desires, turn offs and confrontations.

In whatchamacallit we experience the strong urge to expose fragility and  what we normally want to hide. With humour and rawness, this performance searches for the ultimate intimacy and humanity between performers and audience. The performance plays on the exciting balance between being at ease and the question ” may I roll my eyes over your body?”

Extended Synthesis

Where does nature start and end in our body? Humans and their creations are considered somehow separate from other aspects of earthly existence. In ‘Are We The Body’, a polyphonic lecture emphasising the value of balance between our body within different environments. These are the environments we live in, who and what we surround ourselves with and who is living on us. Balance of our psychological, physical and environmental ecologies, microbial balance on our bodies and the balance of these human and nonhuman inter and intra actions. Transcending this idea that we can revert back to mother nature. ‘Are We The Body’ is a tool to understand the body and its orientation and the way we think about physiological individuality.

Op donderdag 8 december vind je het Antwerpse turntable collectief Soul Supply achter de draaitafels. Opgericht door lokale creatives met een passie voor electronische, funky muziek en hiphop. Eerder al te zien en te horen geweest op Meeting Of Styles, Steez Festival, 'Nuff Said, J Dilla Tributes, Mellowdaze Live Sessions en meer. Met hun brede repertoire aan funky tunes en hiphop, nemen ze je mee op een trip naar het verleden én de toekomst.
