Je gaf me een opdracht die me dwong om vaker poëzie te lezen, zodoende te kunnen kiezen. Merci.

Het is een gedicht geworden uit het recentste boek van Kae Tempest, 'Divisible by One and Itself'. Verwijzend naar priemgetallen en patronen. Die zijn tof.
Het was een nek-aan-nek-race met de tekst van het nummer 'No Prizes' ('Misread prophecies and misheard promises...') dat hen zo ontwapenend brengt in dialoog met Lianne La Havas. Maar dat kent iedereen, nee, ik vind dat iedereen dat zou moeten kennen. Kent gij dat?

Wat Tempest ons aanraadt, is om poëzie luidop te lezen. Luid.

Wat me aanspreekt in hun werk is dat het dwingt minder bezig te zijn met onze interne dialoog en die naar buiten te trekken. Om meer te kijken, en niet enkel naar het vertrouwde. Hen schrijft zonder schroom, zonder excuses en dat vind ik prachtig.

Tempest vertelde tijdens een interview dat hen gaf toen deze bundel uitkwam: 'If you begin the poem knowing the end, you have already killed the poem. Where the poem comes from and where it's going to go, you don't have any say in it'.
