NL| Cinema Soleil is een avond die ruimte maakt voor verhalen uit het Afrikaanse continent en van afro-descendente filmmakers. In deze eerste editie ligt de focus op kortfilms die de rijkdom en complexiteit van Afrikaanse identiteiten en ervaringen verbeelden. Daarnaast gaan we in gesprek met filmmakers uit binnen- en buitenland, in verschillende fases van hun carrière. We spreken met hen over hun artistieke proces, hun drijfveren en het ‘waarom’ achter hun werk. Met Cinema Soleil willen we bruggen bouwen, inspireren en frisse, gelaagde narratieven naar voren brengen.

Ter gelegenheid van Black History Month cureert That Natural Thing een namiddagprogramma samen dat coming of age benadert als een relationeel proces. Aan de hand van poëzie, film en gesprek onderzoeken we hoe individuen gevormd worden door familie, gemeenschap en de systemen waarin ze opgroeien. De namiddag nodigt uit tot reflectie over verbondenheid, volwassen worden, je plek vinden binnen het collectief en de manier waarop die gemeenschap ons mee vormgeeft.

Het programma opent met SESA, een poëzievoorstelling met muziek die thematisch de toon zet. Vervolgens vertonen we vier kortfilms: 'Kids See Ghosts' van Daniel Thalmas, 'Nané Komé' van Shina Bieber, 'Refuge' van Malkia Mutiri en 'Flamant Rose' van Souleymane Sylla. Elk van deze films laat op een eigen manier zien hoe “je plek vinden” nooit een louter individueel proces is, maar ontstaat in nabijheid tot en soms in frictie met het collectief.

We sluiten af met een verdiepend gesprek met de filmmakers, waarin de verschillende perspectieven samenkomen. Na afloop wordt het publiek uitgenodigd om via een community wall een eigen reflectie achter te laten: een gedeelde echo van wat gezien, gehoord en gevoeld werd.

ENG| Cinema Soleil is an evening dedicated to stories from the African continent and by Afro-descendant filmmakers. In this first edition, the focus is on short films that capture the richness and complexity of African identities and experiences. Alongside the screenings, we engage in conversation with filmmakers from both within and beyond our borders, representing different stages of their careers. Together, we explore their artistic processes, motivations, and the “why” behind their work. With Cinema Soleil, we aim to build bridges, spark inspiration, and foreground fresh, layered narratives.

On the occasion of Black History Month, That Natural Thing curates an afternoon programme that approaches coming of age as a relational process. Through poetry, film and conversation, we explore how individuals are shaped by family, community and the systems in which they grow up. The afternoon invites reflection on connection and becoming, on finding one’s place within the collective, and on how that collective, in turn, shapes us.

The programme opens with SESA, a poetry performance accompanied by music that sets the thematic tone. This is followed by a selection of four short films: 'Kids See Ghosts' by Daniel Thalmas, 'Nané Komé' by Shina Bieber, 'Refuge' by Malkia Mutiri and 'Flamant Rose' by Souleymane Sylla. An in-depth conversation with the filmmakers concludes the programme, bringing the different perspectives into dialogue. Afterwards, the audience is invited to leave a personal reflection on a community wall, as a shared echo of what has been seen, heard and felt.
