FOOD IS IDENTITY
ENG| Some stories are told not only through words, but also through aromas, flavours, and recipes passed down from one generation to the next. For Palestinians, food is much more than nourishment. It preserves memories, carries traditions forward, and keeps people connected to a homeland that many have been forced to leave behind. This is also the story of Nour Elnono.
Together with Nour Foundation and Nour Kitchen, Arenberg invites you to Food is Identity: a special evening where culture and solidarity come together. Throughout the evening, you will get to know Nour Elnono, a Palestinian chef from Gaza who now lives in Belgium. When the war began, she felt powerless. Far away from her family, she could not protect them, but she could return to the one thing her mother had taught her: cooking.
What started as a small act of love grew into Nour Kitchen and later Nour Foundation. Today, the foundation has supported more than 10 000 people in Gaza through emergency food aid, clean drinking water, humanitarian relief, and livelihood projects that help families rebuild their lives. The foundation focuses especially on families who have no relatives or support network abroad.
During the evening, Nour Elnono and Palestinian writer and journalist Fatena Al-Ghorra will take you on a journey through the story of Palestinian cuisine. Nour will share how Nour Foundation was established and how a personal initiative evolved into an organisation that now supports thousands of people. Fatena Al-Ghorra will then explore how Palestinian dishes carry history, identity, and collective memory. The programme also features a live Palestinian Dabke performance, bringing the energy and spirit of Palestinian culture to life. Everyone is warmly invited to join in and dance.
We will end the evening the way the most meaningful gatherings do: around the table, sharing a traditional Palestinian dinner prepared by Nour Kitchen.
All proceeds from the event will support the humanitarian work of Nour Foundation in Gaza. Nour's extended family, who were displaced from Gaza and are now rebuilding their lives in Egypt, continue to need support. Through the DENB (Drop Earrings, Not Bombs) project, they handcraft Palestinian earrings, providing a modest but meaningful source of income. During the event, you will find more information on how you can support both this initiative and the work of Nour Foundation. Donation links will also be available throughout the evening and via Nour Kitchen's Instagram page.
Join us on 27 September to listen, taste, connect, and come together, and discover how food does more than nourish, it preserves memories, tells stories, and keeps an identity alive.
