We should never feel too comfortable," schrijven Yasmine Deroui en Myra Schouten in hun brief.

Deze performance is een coming-of-age trip langs de weg van erfgoed, waar de persoonlijke ervaringen van Yasmine en Myra over de geschiedenis van migratie gelegd worden. Instinctief transformeren Yasmine en Myra het podium tot een ruimte tussenin voor diaspora kids die op de tippen van hun tenen tussen laveren tussen terugwinnen en toe-eigening. Fatherland volgt zowel hun successen als hun falen, terwijl Yasmine en Myra ondertussen leren troost te vinden in het niet-behoren en bewegen tussen culturen.

Over Yasmine en Myra

Yasmine Deroui is een theatermaakster en dramaturge uit Brussel met een Master in Theater van de Toneelacademie in Maastricht. Myra Schouten is een performer en theatermaakster uit Rotterdam, afgestudeerd aan het Instituut voor Performing Arts Maastricht.

Tijdens hun zoektocht naar ergens bijhoren in relatie tot Marokkaans erfgoed en hun mixed-race identiteiten, groeide hun samenwerking. Hun praktijk beweegt tussen theater, performance en videokunst; en brengt zowel persoonlijke ervaringen als politiek samen door een auto-theoretische benadering. Yasmine en Myra vertalen live ervaringen in politieke experimenten en zintuiglijke vormen, dankzij hun unieke stijl van schrijven - die je gerust journaling kan noemen - en het herwerken van bestaande teksten. Voor hen is het lichaam een speeltuin voor experiment: ze ontwikkelen een podiumpresence die groeit vanuit gevoel, ze maken performances die het publiek uitnodigen om te voelen wat ze zien. De performances van Yasmine en Myra bestaan uit gelaagd hybride materiaal en laten hen toe vanop het podium in dialoog te treden. Zodat het politieke, persoonlijke en theoretische kunnen schuren en resoneren.

The performance is a coming-of-age journey along the road of heritage, layering our personal experiences with the history of migration. We instinctively transform the stage into an in-between space for diaspora kids who tiptoe on the edge between reclamation and appropriation. It follows both our successes and our failures, as we learn to find solace in not belonging and in moving between cultures.

About Yasmine & Myra

Yasmine Deroui is a theatre maker and dramaturg based in Brussels and she obtained a Master in Theatre at the Toneelacademie of Maastricht. Myra Schouten is a performer and theatre maker based in Rotterdam, graduated from Institute for Performing Arts Maastricht.

Their collaboration grew as they explored belonging in relation to Moroccan heritage and their mixed-race identities. Their practice moves between theatre, performance and video art, bringing together the personal and the political through an auto theoretical approach. Using journal-style writing and reworkings of existing texts, they translate lived experiences into political experiments and sensory forms. For both artists, the body is a playground for experimentation: they develop stage imagery that grows from embodied sensations, creating performances that invite audiences to feel what they observe. They create their performances by layering hybrid materials and putting them into dialogue on stage so that the political, personal, and theoretical can friction and resonate in a critical way
